Enhancing Diversity in Computational Mass Spectrometry

EOSS-DI

2021

Proposal Summary

To increase diversity in computational mass spectrometry through teaching and mentoring with the open-source framework OpenMS.

OpenMS

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a sensitive high-throughput technique capable of direct quantitative measurement of proteins, which perform essentially all cellular tasks required for life. MS is used in fields ranging from forensics, biomedicine, systems biology to drug development and ecology. OpenMS is a leading open-source library for MS data processing and data analysis. This proposal aims to leverage OpenMS as a teaching tool that allows users to see what happens “under the hood” and inspire researchers to take data analysis into their own hands. This work will target early-career researchers (undergraduates, MSc, PhD students and postdocs) which are already in the MS field but with little exposure to computational methods and train them in open source computational tools.
